How do you feel about naming kids after countries/cities/geographical places?

I like really elegant, unusual names. I always thought names like Ireland, Russia, Berlin, Vienna, India, Kenya, and Persia would be perfect for a girl, and Rome, Cyprus, Kingston, and Rhode would be cute for a boy. Would it be smart to name a child after a country/city you have no connection or affiliation with but just liked the name? I truly would like to name my child something uncommon and pretty.

How do you feel about naming kids after countries/cities/geographical places?
I think it's beautiful to name your child a name you really like. People who "make fun" of other peoples names are just plain immature, and in the long run, your child won't hate you. Sometimes a child can grow up resenting a simple or traditional name more than a unique yet pretty name. Don't go crazy for the sake of your child, but pick something that represents beauty, and many of the countries you've named have, if not today, been known for beauty for various reasons. My parents named me after my mom, it's very simple and lots of people love it, but I would have preferred something different. I know Michelle's, Jessica's, Terry's, etc. All who would have loved to have an exotic name. I'm having a new baby in December and her name will be Selah, you say it (Say-lah), it's in the Bible in psalms. It means something very dear to me and I choose it because I want her to live up to that name, if other people don't like it, it's not their kid, they'll get over it!
Reply:i love it! vienna is beautiful
Reply:I like 鈾€

Venice

Persia

Indiana

Ireland

Virginia

I like 鈾?br>

Rio

Troy

Rome
Reply:Kudos for being original. If you like the name, it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks. Yes kids are cruel but even the ones with common names get picked on for that reason.

I actually like the names you have chosen.
Reply:i like it, like london or paris are real good names. rome is nice for a boy, it'll be better to name the girl after a country bc it'll be cool. the girl can brag that i have a country named after me not the other way around. i perfer naming the girl a country name other then a boy
Reply:I used to like the name Troy for a boy----until it was used for that guy in High School Musical. *shivers*
Reply:Madison, Dakota and Siena have all become popular! so Why not?

I personally LOVE Argentina and India as girls' names... If you don't want it to be like the country/city/state you an alter the spelling.. like Affrica, Maddison, etc...

Persia sounds pretty

Rome is an AWESOME name for a boy, he sounds good looking!!! Cyprus is cool too!
Reply:My little one is Tate Kingston, so yeah I think if it sounds beautiful to you that is all that matters.
Reply:I think it would be cruel... think of the teasing they will endure! It's so selfish when parents get 'creative' with names.
Reply:Being completely honest... I hate it! My friends and I always joke about the poor "location named girls". That being said, I think it's great for pets. I had a dog named Zimbabwe (Zimmy) and people thought that was pretty neat.

As a Catholic, it is part of our religion to always name a child for a saint so that there is someone in heaven praying for your child to live a holy, righteous life. This is a wonderful tradition. Not only can you give your child the gift of a beautiful name, but also the gift of a holy patron in heaven fighting constantly for their salvation. What could be better than that? :)
Reply:if it means something special, that's cool. but if it's to spite the child or your partner, that's not cool. Im thinking that you're going with my first option so i think that's be cool.
Reply:Well you can name a girl Italia. That is Italy in Spanish. As far as other countries I think that is the only one I like.
Reply:my favorite is Cheyenne{moms name} and Sydney {my name}and Payson {my nephew}
Reply:Generally speaking, I think the unfortunate fact is that no matter how uncommon a certain place name may be as a given name, it will rarely SEEM all that unusual. Especially if there is a known celebrity (of sorts) or other ready association with the name. Paris (Hilton), Vienna (sausages), Kingston (Stefani's little tabloid angel), etc.

Now I can certainly understand a parent's desire to use a place name that does hold special meaning for them. A childhood home, favorite vacation spot or the city they honeymooned in, for example. All the better if it isn't already a stereotypically meaningless, trendy choice (Brooklyn or Madison, for instance).

But short of that, I'd never use a random place name that ISN'T also a historic given name.

In other words, there's absolutely nothing wrong with using something like Charlotte, Virginia or Adelaide. These aren't random "place" names at all. Rather, the places were generally named after people, not vice versa! LOL

But those that ARE simply places the parents thought would sound "cool" and "unusual" as a child's name? Generally not the best idea, often coming across as trendy, ignorant of said place or even completely lower-class. Definitely a case-by-case situation, however.
Reply:I like the fact that u like uncommon names like that but I don't really like those names. What about naming them after a season or tree(those names r kinda more cutsey 2 me).? Like Summer, Autum, maple, or Isabelle ( I know the last one isn't a tree or a season but I like it) !
Reply:you may like it but what about your child?think about it when he or she will grow up...
Reply:i totally argue with you on the names

Hope you like one, the ones you have choosen are really nice too! Good luck.
Reply:Personally, I think it's ridiculous. There are plenty of beautiful human names out there and I don't see why you should resort to using the names of countries. To me it's also kind of disrespectful (for lack of a better term) to use a place name on a person just because it sounds cool. It's also something that could cause teasing.

Take a look at a baby names book, I'm sure you'll find something that suits your taste. There are loads of first names that come from place names (Magdalene, Roman, Bethany, Hadrian, etc.)
Reply:I like it, I really like the name london, and it can be used for a boy or girl!

However, I would guess paris would be out.
Reply:How about Ashtabula or Mongolia.
Reply:I like the idea. Some of my favorite names (for future children) are place names and my sister's two kids both have names of cities for their first names. However, not everyone likes the idea. My boss (when she found out my niece's name) said, "What is she going to name the next one? Hoboken?" I thought it was rude but that was her opinion. And then I made a face when I heard someone my sister knew named her kid Camden (so I'm not totally free of judgment either). All I thought of was Camden, New Jersey, which is not a nice city, not something you'd want to be named after. (My sister has another friend whose son is named Trenton, another city in New Jersey.) So my advice would be to research that place (if travel to that place is not possible) and make sure the name won't have a bad connotation for a lot of people or you'll hear a lot of comments like my boss's. Out of the names you listed, I've heard of Ireland, India, and Kenya all being used for girls and Kingston (and Roman but not Rome) being used for a boy. They're mostly all nice names and your child wouldn't be totally unique but would still be set apart from the Jaydens, Madisons, Kaitlyns, Jacobs, Joshuas, Emilys, and Emmas. Also this is not a totally new idea although some of your names sound fresher. But think of the popularity of some place names: Austin, Savannah, Dallas, Cheyenne, Brooklyn, Carson (as in Carson City), etc.

Best of luck!
Reply:I love Ireland and Kingston. Don't think it's odd. Who knows maybe one day you will visit and have the affiliation. Either way, I think it's important that you are happy with what you call your child.
Reply:My opinion is here:

Hope that helps and happy reading! :)
Reply:I really like Savannah, Madison, Alexandria, and Dakota. All names of places.
Reply:Place names are very trendy right now so your child would not be made fun of because there would be lots of other children with place names out there. That being said, each place name is usually rare, and I do agree with you that they are elegant. I really love them, especially for a girl.

I think that it would mean more if it were named after a place with which you had some connection. That being said, there is absoluely nothing wrong with giving your child a name just because you like how it sounds!
Reply:i like it when people are named after a country or place its interesting.
Reply:Come to think of it not only geographical locations, are not the only sources of which to obtain uncommon and pretty/ handsome names for anyone's children. One such source is http://www.babynameaddicts.com/ Another is http://www.alternativebabynames.com/

I must say there are many cities and towns that I liked their names in ideas for baby names.
