If you do a bit of research, you will find a number of observatories, planetaria, and science centres which have star naming programs. You will at least know that your money goes towards a charitable donation, rather than supporting a scam.
Another idea is to buy your niece a subscription to an astronomy magazine or a membership in an astronomy club instead.
