What would happen if McCain passed away before the General Election, with out naming a VP?

I don't wish the man any ill will, but he is up there in age, and has yet to select a VP. Will the republicans have a nominee, would it be Romney since he was in second in the delegate count, our would it be Huckabee or Ron Paul since they were last to drop out?

70 isn't that old...
Reply:The Republican nominee will be whomever they pick at their convention. If McCain were to die before the convention, his delegates would be free to vote for whomever they wanted. The vp is selected the day after the president. So unless McCain dies the night he is nominated, the scenario you are suggesting will not happen. And if he died after he is nominated, the Republican party would either hold another convention and select a new nominee or would go with their vice-presidential candidate.
Reply:The decision would be left up to the Republican delegates.

Reply:Since that could only happen before the convention, they would have to release McCains's delegates and they could vote for any of the candidates, or anyone else. It would not go to Huckabee or Paul by default, neither has enough delegates to claim the nomination.
Reply:Even if he did name a VP it wouldn't matter. IT would go to the convention. It would be a brokered convention like the one with the Dems. The delegates would then vote and name a nominee. It is important to note too that Romney only suspended his campaign he did not drop out. Thus he is still technically in the race since he hasn't released his delegates...The man is too smart to cut himself completely out.
Reply:How about if Obama passed away first?
Reply:The convention would be back to square one.
Reply:i think it would be romney. Tho huck has more delegates, he only does because Romney left early. the conservative wing liked, not loved, but liked Romney better. He would either be a win or a big bust if he were the nominee. He does attack more than McCain and is more charismatic, but could come off phony, mormon, and his prior job of corporate raiding would only hurt him.
Reply:why don麓t you say that you love obama and that you think McCain is too old.....believe my friend obama would like to have a 2% percent of McCain麓s resume

..btw obama will never get into the white house whit his unpatriotic wife and friends
Reply:Same thing as would happen if the democratic nominee passed away- oh sorry - still don't have one of those do we? We would choose another nominee- it wouldn't automatically be the VP choice even if he did have one since people didn't vote for that person.
Reply:i would throw a party
Reply:Romney and Huckabee withdrew, I think that leaves just Ron Paul on the ticket. Your scenario is based on a tight window of chance. As far as I can tell (still searching) their aren't any "do over" contingencies for selecting a nominee, so it would fall to the next active participant.

That would explain why some of these party guys never leave the race.
Reply:The Republican party would be forced to elect a new candidate like the dems this year. In a small smoke filled room, with a handful of people.
Reply:You dont have to worry about that cause there is no way that McCain is going to win.....He is too old and i dont think he can run America in his condition!
Reply:Well, we all would probably be in better shape, if the whole thing was done over.
Reply:good question, I'm sure the Republican party has a proviso. Might just have to start over...but I've already lost patience with politics this year.
Reply:Probably the same thing if Hillary got run over by a drunk Paris Hilton or Obama died of sickle cell disease.
Reply:Ron Paul would most likely win...
