Have you ever thought about naming your child in a different language?

My family has always had Native Irish names cause of our Irish heritage. I think about giving French or Spanish or other names to my kids, I am not pregnant now, but if I will ever be do you have any suggestions?

Have you ever thought about naming your child in a different language?
First off, before I forget, Adrian is a very nice name. I think it would be a great thing for you to do to break the chain of Irish names (although I do love Irish names). I love French names. Adelaide, Adele, Belle, Brie, Avril, Renee, Celine, Chantel, Fay(e), Juliette, Lyddie, Mallory for girls

Andre, Dashiell, Gaston, Laurent, Mason, Percival, Silvain, Sabin, Sidney for boys
Reply:Czech names are really cool!
Reply:i have a Russian name- Katya (KAH-tee-yah) but Russians sometimes spell it Katja cuz their 'j' sounds like a 'y'. so ya i like foreign names, here are a few:

Andreas

Blaine

Brett

Brady

Callen

Caesar

Chandler

Chase
Reply:my baby is half puerto rican, and im italian and white.. my faverite choice and i defienitly wanted to name our baby boy a spanish name.. and so we picked Lorentzo for him, and the middle name is joseph cuz my grandpa.. so it doesnt really matter because i really love spanish
Reply:My wife's name is Polish and my daughter's name is Mayan. Both of this names have a similar meanings. In my opinion, naming kids in a different lenguage shows the level of education of the parents. Who would want to meet 10 Bridget's in the same samily?
Reply:I love the french name Colette.
Reply:I think French and Spanish names are lovely!! I have a French name - Natalie although the french spelling is Nathalie. My brother has an Irish name - Connor. I love Spanish and Italian names like Lucia, Rosalie, Esme, Elsa and Eliza. Hope this helps and good luck.
Reply:Hi, I think it depends on the name that you are thinking of. It's ok giving your child a foreign name but I think the spelling of the name is important so that people can pronounce it when they try to read it. For example, when you go to the hospital you would want the doctor to be able to pronounce it when they call for your child.

Names like Pierre, Laurencia and Marie-Caire are all fine as we can say them but if for example a letter is pronounced differently in the other language then that is where it can get confusing. I like like the Turkish name Ceydan which is pronounced as Jaydan in English so I think I would have to spell it the English way or people won't know how to say it and I think it can be embarrassing for a young child when people make up pronounciations.

You said that you are of Irish heritage and all the children in your family have native Irish names. To a British person like me some Irish names are difficult to say. I don't mean to be ignorant when I say this but Roison, Aoife, Naeve are examples of names that people probably have difficulty in saying. I know Roison is pronounced as Rosheen but as for Aoife and Naeve, I wouldn't know where to start therefore if I saw the name Aoife on a piece of paper and I had to say it out loud then I would feel very awkward.

Have a look online to see if you can find any nice Spanish or French names. Some of them are really nice and sound very classy.
Reply:I would use a different language name for the middle name. It won't be weird to be called that, but they're too good not to use.

I like Adrian.
Reply:Yes. I go for Greek, Japanese, French or Italian names mostly, but I like alot of other foreign names too. It depends on how the name sounds to me and what it means, but also the spelling and pronunciation.

I don't like Adrian for a boy. It seems kind of girly.
Reply:I kind of prefer names that honor the parent's heritage. I think French names are fine but Spanish names would be kind of weird for a white kid. I've never seen a white kid named Miguel or Diego lol
Reply:Almost all of the names I love are of Greek, Latin, Italian, German, Irish, etc. origin. I would have no problems naming my kids any of those. However, I probably would not name my kids names that were blatantly and obviously Asian/African/etc. if my kids were not part Asian/African/etc. just because it wouldn't be as easy for a white kid to pull off a name like Shuichi as it would be for a name like Sebastian.
Reply:i think that would be cool. some normal names are spanish, like maria.......
Reply:i like spanish names
