What do you think about naming a child after another person?

Not family. But like after your favourite author, musician or someone you look up to.

I'm not sure if it's something i would do, at least not for the first name.

What do you think? Would you do it?

What do you think about naming a child after another person?
It depends on the name... I'm not sure how old you are, but there was a musician from Smashing Pumpkins named Billy Corgan. I was like 14, and it was my favorite band. Anyway, I thought Corgan would be a cool name for a boy or girl. I never used it, instead I named my rabbit Corgan- a much better fit, than for a baby. I don't think it's a bad idea, I think most of it is the association with the name. If it's already a name you like, like the name Tyra, and you love Tyra Banks, then you have the great association-which will make you like the name more. If you can't stand Drew Barrymore, and like the name Drew(for a girl), then it'll probably turn you off of the name.

Anyone that's had kids knows this. I can't tell you how many times we would talk about names and end up saying something like...'What about the name Jason?' and the reply was something like, 'I knew a Jason in highschool, he was a whitetrash pothead', so you move on. It's not that your child will be a whitetrash pothead if his name is Jason, that's just how you associate the name. Make sense?

If you have someone you look up to named Melanie, then you see Melanie as a respectable person that's done something with there life. Of course you'll see it differently than someone who knew a drug addict named Melanie. You've learned to associate the name with greatness.

I don't think it's a bad idea. It's hard enough to name a baby, why not choose a name associated with something/someone you adore?
Reply:I'd name my child after -

● Somebody dead, so that I know everything about the person.I know that sounds incredibly morbid, but I'd hate to name a child after someone and then that person turns out not to be as awesome as you thought he/she was.

● Somebody whose name I would like regardless of whether it was associated with that person.
Reply:Haha i was gonna name my son Edsel after a lead singer of his dads and mine favorite band.. we got overruled by the grandmothers saying that it was the name of a flop car and blah blah blah (the edsel ford) and also everyone brought up that it rhymed with pretzel.. If in the future we have a girl my fiance wants to name her Kira (from mortal kombat) Anne (after his mom) my son ended up being Victor James.. Victor just cuz i liked it and James for my friend Jamie who called me the second she found out i was pregnant and was like "YOU HAVE TO NAME YOUR KID AFTER ME!!!" she never made the connection and i sprung it on her on her wedding day and she almost cried. it was awesome :)
Reply:I think if i really had a person that i loved, and that i idolised in a way, then it would be ok. i think its nice to do that. if you like the name, you can use it as a first name. I think either first or middle names are fine :)

x
Reply:that would be okay.. especially if that person had done something great..

they say that names also define who you are as a person..

so hopefully before naming your child, do look up the meaning of the names in the dictionary..

:)
Reply:My daughters first name is going to be from a very good friend of mines middle name

Jordyn Faythe-daughter

Skylar Jordyn-friend

i dont see anything wrong in it... now days it can be hard to give your kid a name no one else has... technically your naming your kid after someone.

Reply:There is nothing wrong with that My mom named me after the actress Melissa Gilbert. She used to love the show Little House on the Prairie. Alot of people do that it is a easy way to figure out a name for your child.
Reply:My son Jett Keanu is named after Keanu Reeves because I really admire him and he has such a beautiful name. I think it is up to the individual person and how much this name means to you.
Reply:I named my son Noah after Scott Weiland's son, and the middle name Michael from the Morrissey song Michaels Bones.
Reply:Yeah but I'd switch their names around. Instead of Jeffrey Donovan it'd be Donovan Jeffrey =)
Reply:Sure I would, as long as I liked the name. I wouldn't use it just because I like the person though.
Reply:If you like the name and the person is ok, why not?
Reply:That`s how most names get so popular
