I think it is okay [a bit egotistical] but I personally would prefer to name a star after someone that meant something very special to me.
as for the people who detract from the naming of stars I think that they are being short sighted. the money raised through the naming of stars is used to help fund various programs that the government doesn't think is worth the $$. But many programs ARE worth the money (the politicians that decide on funding often look for the political rather than the practical aspect). There are so many Billions of visible stars in the night sky (unless you live in the city) that to double sell the same star would be ridiculous. When you name a star they will send you the information to plot the star in the night sky so that you CAN find the star. To find the star that you named get a telescope (or find some one who has a telescope) that can plot the position of the star automatically. once you've found it remember what stars are around around it and you should be able to find it with the naked eye any time after that (clouds permitting).
What do you think about people naming stars after themselves?
It's a rip off don't waste your money.
Reply:it makes them happy and it funds research, no problem!
Reply:I would find it pretty foolish to pay my own money for it as in a certain commercial when you can simply do it yourself. But that's an individual choice so I'm not knocking it if someone else does it , I just wouldn't myself.
Reply:Don't the stars already have names?
Reply:It's a scam. We can't name stars. All stars are officially named when they are discovered. And how do you know which star is yours? There are billions upon billions of stars out there. There is no way of knowing which is yours. And Joe Schmo's star may also be Ben Dover's star. You never know. People are just dumb, and yet, the people that started these "star naming businesses" are making a bloody fortune.
Reply:Why not, there is a dog star, may as well be a Lucy and Ricky. Whatever floats your boat, just keep the lawyers away for infringement rights lawsuits..
Reply:well nothing. there's no point to that.
Reply:Just because you decide to refer to an object with a sound, it doesn't mean I will use the same sound to differentiate that same entity.
Reply:I think that it is ridiculous!
Reply:its kinda dumb
Reply:If you're referring to a scientist discovering a new star (like back in the days of Galileo) then I think it's cool and appropriate (assimung, of course, that the star has some sort of significance, like being the "north star" of being a sun to a different solar system.). If you mean somebody paying to name a star (which is a new thing), then yeah, it's kinda dumb. Why would anybody care? Also, does anyone actually think that that name will hold? What if they chart te universe and names the star something else? What will that person do then? And also, how would anyone know that the same star hasn't been sold to several other people as well? It's quite ridiculous.
Reply:Why not?People can do whatever they want, It's called FREEDOM so what's the problem?
Reply:I think it is a scam.
Reply:I think it's a waist of money and they have probably sold the same star to 20 other people.. How would you ever know.
Reply:Its ok. it makes a unusual gift. But the likeliness that you would be able to locate the actual star with your name is not good.
Reply:You know the saying that a fool and his money are soon parted. In some cases, some are so foolish, it's a wonder they even met to begin with.
Reply:I think it's ok, like if it's a thing between you and a friend or a boyfriend or something, but I know people that has paid money to have a star named after them. Why I asked that is so stupid. It's not like they are going to study your star in science books or everyone in the world will know it's your star. What a rip. Anyways how can you tell stars apart, it's all just a big ball of gas! but like i said that is my opinion.
Reply:I had an ex boyfriend who actually did this as a gift for me. We broke up, and he left it on my doorstep, it was a nice gesture, but doing it for yourself is kind of odd.
Reply:It's a waste of money. This "named star" is only kept in whatever database of whatever company is selling this "right". It doesn't mean anything to NASA, and could easily be resold by another company (probably related to the first one).
Reply:self centered
Reply:I like the concept. But I would name it something other than my name,I do not like my name.
Reply:Don't waste your money. It's bogus.
Reply:My husband got me a star for a Christmas gift 2 years ago. I know that it is corny. But it is a gift I will have forever. And I thought it was romantic.
Reply:simple! they want to become famous too
Reply:They must be very lonely and pathetic to have to do that.
Reply:logical. they found it, it should b theirs or at least for others to know that its theirs...
Reply:I am named after an actress and I really like my name! I don't think its dumb. After all, you are who YOU are, not the name itself!
Reply:In my personal opinion, I think it's a strange and disrespectful thing - why do people have to have something like that to call their own? Obviously, they are trying to fulfill some insecurity.
Reply:Stupid
Why would I name something after myself when the guy next door is naming the same star after himself?
Reply:they want to leave their names to stars after they die
