Is naming the main guy Jared in my story copying the host?

I'm writing a story and i still haven't figured a name. I am leaning towards Jared because i've always loved that name. He has some characteristics of the Jared in the Host and i really don't want to copy.

If not Jared, could you list some other names please?

Thank you :)

It's not copying, but you might want to consider whether you were influenced by Host when you were creating the character. Your subconscious could be attempting to write about Host-Jared without you even knowing it.

More likely, you've just created a great character who happens to share the same name as another character. It's a common name. There's Subway Jared, and a bunch of boys from my school have that name. I say, full speed ahead! If you're not convinced, here are some names I personally like:

David

Noah

Jesse

Isaac

Tom

Daniel

Perry

Quincy

James

Jackson

Good luck, and happy writing!
Reply:You can name your character whatever you please. It is very, very common for novice (inexperienced) writers to copy from other writers/books b/c they are not confident enough to venture out on their in terms of imagination and creativity.

The name "Jared" does not come with a list of "characteristics." YOU decide what characteristics this individual has regardless of his name. You are relying too much on your experience in reading "The Host" and allowing it to color your decisions. Don't do that.

You can write your story without this character having a name. Novice writers also treat their characters like babies and agonize over what to name them. Write the story. If by the time you are finished writing, you have not settled on a name, visit one of the name sites and scroll through the lists.

Reply:I can't suggest any names without knowing some information about the character (such as physical appearance and personality) but if you're wanting to keep that secret, I completely understand.

If you're looking for a good name(s) for your character, doing some research will help you tremendously in your final decision. Get on the internet and start researching different names you like. There are plenty of websites out there that have a wide variety of names that could from different people, religions, countries, languages, etc,. You might be surprised what you'll stumble across just by doing some simple research. However, before turning to the internet, I'd recommend going to a local bookstore and purchasing a huge book of names to go through and see if there's anything you might like in there. Names have never really be a problem for me. Below are a few sites where you can find many of the different names throughout the world. Anyways, hope this helps.

Reply:You tell me - is he a copy of the character?

If so, renaming him won't help. You need to make him his own person.
