When naming ketones which also contain an aldehyde group, which takes precedence?

A. the ketone

B. the aldehyde

C. neither, they're used in the order encountered

D. the longest branched chain

E. the shortest alkyl chain

When naming ketones which also contain an aldehyde group, which takes precedence?
Generally, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) rules state that you use the longest chain, answer D. However, many chemical compounds have more common names, and the IUPAC rules are cumbersome.
Reply:ACCORDING TO THE IUPAC SYSTEM I THINK THE ANS.B ie.THE ALDEHYDE TAKES PRECEDENCE.
Reply:Consult an IUPAC naming site for specific questions but I would say that it would be c.
