What is a general rule for naming elements? I know there are exceptions for elements such as sodium but what might account for these exceptions??

there isn't any exceptions .. some are latin .. some are scientists names .. But what we work with is what's in the periodic table





About sodium and potassium they're not exceptions ..


Sodium is Natrium in latin


Potassium is Kalium in latin

As far as all the elements on the periodic table, I know of no rule for naming them all. I know that most of the abbreviations match the words (ie the first couple of letters of the name) but some have nothing to do with the name of the element and that is usually because the person who discovered the element wanted it named after him. For example tungsten has the symbol "W" because the man who discovered it was a German who's last name started with "w".
