What do you think about naming kids after cities and states?

What do you think about names like Brooklyn, Miami, Georgia, Dakota, Sydney etc.

What do you think about naming kids after cities and states?
Personally, I don't like it. I live in Brooklyn and even though I love living in Brooklyn, I hate when I hear that people have named their kid Brooklyn. It just doesn't sound right to me.

Now, Georgia is an old fashioned girl's name, that might even pre-date the state of Georgia. I don't think I'd assume that a girl named Georgia was named for the place.
Reply:Some names, like Georgia and Sydney, have a traditional feel, which is comforting to name traditionalists such as myself! Helena, the capital of Montana, makes for a lovely (I think) girl's name. I like Salem for a girl, too. But if Miami, for example, were not the name of a city, parents today would likely consider it a fluffy old name that had no place in today's classrooms. I mean, people can go really overboard with naming children after cities and states; imagine a person, adult or child, called Idaho or Montpelier. Ouch.
Reply:There are some names like Jackson and Savannah, that even though they are the name of a place are accepted as names. Others like Brooklyn and Milan are tacky in my opinion, especially if you don't have any connection to the place. I also think that naming a baby after the place they were conceived is terribly tacky.
Reply:Wow, if you think about it LOTS of names are cities/states/countries.

These are the ones I like:

Brooklynn (although, since I live in NYC, i wouldn't use it!)

Giorgia (i have a friend with this name)

Jackson (there's this guy I like with this name...lol, he's my ex too)

Charlotte (i know someone with this name)

Austin

Houston (i'm starting to like it, I have a friend with this name too)

Lorraine (it's a reigion in France, I LOVE this name)

I can't really think of any others...I also know a Sydney and German (girl %26amp; boy).

But I don't like to name the child AFTER that place. If it's because you like the name then that's alright. I wouldn't name my child after the city/state/country, etc.

xx
Reply:It depends...

As far as states go I don't care for very many. Carolina and Georgia are ok, but I dislike some of them like Alabama, Arizona, Indiana, etc. Some states should stay states and not become name.

As for cities, I think there are a lot of great names that just also happen to be cities which is fine (as long as you don't live in that city..lol). I like Brooklyn, Sydney, etc.

:o)
Reply:I've known a Georgia, Dallas, Jackson, Houston, Sydnie, Brooklyn, Kingston, Paris, Milan, Dakota, Phoenix and I think a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head. There is nothing wrong with those names, the nicknames of some of them are really cute, i.e. Koda for Dakota. To each his own.
Reply:Brooklyn- cute, but I would use it as a middle name

Miami-no

Georgia- cute nickname= Gigi

Dakota- i like it, but i would probably name a dog that, instead of a child

Sydney- I like it!
Reply:Brooklyn, Dakota, and Sydney are fairly popular now so they don't seem weird. However, Georgia is a little strange, and I have never even heard of anyone named Miami.
Reply:I think Brooklyn and Dakota are nice. I'm not crazy about the other ones. I like the names Denver, Dallas, and Sienna as well. So I guess it depends on the name.
Reply:Brooklyn is my favorite girl name

I also really like the name Sydney and kind of Dakota.

Some of the city and state names sound like normal girl names and some sound weird. It depneds on city or state
Reply:They 麓re nice, as long as they don麓t get TOO crazy...

Like...i would not name a boy "Buenos Aires"!

But they麓re places name after people... For example Florence...

It麓s in fact, something very personal!

Reply:I hate 'em.

Wouldn't these be just as good?

40n38, 73w57

25n46, 80w11

38n42, 86w34

43n59, 89w21

33s52, 151e13

They're just as as attractive as geographical names.

Reply:I think it is fine. Many locations were already names of people or have other meanings associated with them besides just the geographical connotation.
Reply:I like Brooklyn, Savannah, Alexandria, Charlotte
Reply:I think that it depends. Some of those names were names before they were cities. I think miami is odd though. Then again I have a son named Kannyon, so who am I to talk
Reply:

I actually like them alot [:
