How does naming an animal work?

Like when you call a pet it comes running... how does it do that? How does my cat know it's name?

How does naming an animal work?
It doesnt know its name...it just hears the noise of it said soooo many times it recognises the noise and associates it with affection, fun or food.
Reply:It doesn't know its actual name, it recognises the sound of your voice and the way you say it.
Reply:It's from repitition. The more you say the animal's name and are interacting with it as you say the name, it'll know.
Reply:same way a newborn baby does :)
Reply:Youre pet cat will probably come running towards you because he/she likes you being around and usually when you say your pets name you look at them and hint that you want them to come over, after that when you say other peoples names then it shall know its not theirs as you wont be looking at it so it may assume that that is its name!

hope that helps you!
Reply:like the way we humans name babies. they recognise somehow that everytime a certain word or sound is said, it is referring to them!
