Do you guys give your kids, first name and middle name and surname?
As in, doesn't the family name get passed on through the generations
How does american naming system work?
Most people give their children a first name, middle name, and the father's surname.
Reply:A middle name isn't uncommon in the U.S., however it's not an absolute. There's really no traditional naming system associated with the U.S. in particular. We use the same traditions used in other parts of the world depending on your ethnic/religious background. I'm not sure if passing on the mother's maiden name (as a middle name) is common custom elsewhere, but it has roots here in the states (though it's becoming less common). I'm from a christian background and my husband is from a jewish background, we chose to follow the jewish customs of not naming children after a living person (bad luck), giving our children names in memory of passed loved ones instead. I think however, the naming traditions are being used less and less because people in the states what their childrens names to be of their own choice or unique in some manner. Whether this be in the form of a name that's spelt in an unusal way, is an unusual name (like Nevaeh) or a using a dated name (bibilical names for instance) that weren't as commonly used in the 20th century.
Reply:Not sure where you are from. But yes most kids get a first, a middle and a surname. The surname is their fathers surname. The first and middle can be anything. Some kids have two middle names. And some even have a hyphenated surname combining mom and dad. And yes the surname traditionally gets passed from parent to child.
Reply:Some people pass their own names to their children as tradition, yes. My boyfriend is Eli Richardson VI, his father is Eli Richardson V, and his grandfather is Eli Richardson IV, etc.
Not everyone does this though, you can name your child whatever you'd like. Usually the father's last name is passed, however some choose the mothers or a hyphenated combination.
Reply:We don't give 3 names but you have to know all three to see if it sounds right together. Like I was in love with the name Isis and Phoebe and we were going to have the middle name of Indianna. But Phoebe doesn't go with our family name of Mi. So without letting everyone know the family name they couldn't give honest answers.
Reply:We normally do first, middle and then last names. Although sometimes people choose multiple middle names. Example: If the mothers name is Jane Smith,, then she would name her child Jacob (First) Henry (Middle) Smith (Last name/family name).
Hope that helped.. :)
Reply:We can name them what ever Ive seen and know people with two first names like london-knight then middle then last or Jay Dee midlle and last ive also seen people like my dad his name is william love blank and then last name the two middles were from his mom and dads family and so on
Reply:usually that's the way it goes..but basically we can name our kids whatever we want..there are no set rules. a friend of mine gave her kids 2 middle names and combined her and her husbands last name.
Reply:Yeah pretty much.A first name,a middle name and a surname can be the mothers or fathers or both depending. And yes sometimes family names do get passed down.
Reply:Wasn't aware that we had a naming system. No, we don't make up a last name, the baby gets the last name from one of the parents!
Reply:people give their child a first name, middle name [that's usually passed down by generation] and the father's surname.
