First and middle names when naming a child?

Many people in the process of picking baby names have a set of first and middle names they are considering. I would love to hear the different reasons for wanting to have two names.

Thank you!

First and middle names when naming a child?

Reply:I'm interested too. I picked out a first and middle name and my husband (a nonconformist) asked me why? I just thought everybody had to have a middle name...because that's just what you do. I looked up the origin of middle names and the most common answer I found was that it was a German tradition to have a Christian name and a secular name. It just became accepted for ID purposes. We decided to just not have a middle name lol. We didn't need a secular name. :) Not that it's bad AT ALL...I have one but we just thought it wasn't for us.
Reply:It's become common, so it seems necessary.

Even though I have the option of just the first name and surname, I think it's more fun to choose a middle name as well. And it's nice for honoring family; we gave my eldest son his father's middle name as his own middle name because we didn't exactly want a Mike Jr.

Besides, it helps differentiate people when it comes to ID and whatnot. Emily Jane Johnson might not be confused with Emily Marie Johnson quite as easily.
Reply:It has just become a tradition where I'm from to give a child a middle name as well as a first name. Not all cultures do it, but I like it.
Reply:Maybe their first name is the parent's name

and they want to be able to call their kid a nickame.

like me.

my mom named me after her

and now they call me by my middle name
Reply:its become tradition, and it kinda makes your name sound cool. lol.

sometimes they are used as nicknames if you are named after someone
