Is there anyone or anything that can literally stop you from naming a child?

Can the law stop you from naming a child if it were not acceptable. I don't think it can, because noone stopped the naming of a child apple or suri.

I have a friend that wants to name her girl Danni-Boi, and her own mother thinks she has a right to stop the naming. Is this correct?

Is there anyone or anything that can literally stop you from naming a child?
that poor kid
Reply:IDk
Reply:In the USA, no--you can name the child as you wish.

But some countries require approval by the gov't.

I heard about a couple wanting to name their girl "Metallica" in some nordic country...and they had to wait while the gov't decided.
Reply:The only way you'd be stopped naming a child is by a specific court order against a specific name. The name would have to be something obscene or have a number or symbol in it to have a judge consider it. Too bad no one can save your friend's kid from a ridiculous name except her mother.
Reply:Names that would be insulting to a child are reported by hospital personnel to a judge. You won't be allowed to take the child home unless the judge reviews the situation (drugs or reckless parent(s) are often involved). Happens in my county about 3 times a year (about 5,000 babies born annually). I personally think your friend is an idiot, but you have the right to be one in the US.

BTW, Suri is a real name, just not in this culture. Apple was born in the UK, and I don't know the laws there.
Reply:Only if it is profanity. Poor kid. Maybe show this list of answers to your friend, and she'll see some reason.
Reply:There are no laws in place to stop anyone from calling their child what they wish. If you google "weird names" you'll see just how weird some people can get.
Reply:I believe that the registrar of births can refuse a name that is obscene, and people can go to court about it , but generally whatever the parent wants is what they get .

I dont see a problem with that name , her friends will call her danni .
Reply:Probably not. I've heard of people in New Zealand being stopped by a judge from trying to name a baby boy "4Real".

In some countries, names are illegal -- like Adolf Hitler and Osama Bin Laden in Germany.

And French parents must choose from an approved list. The laws are designed to prevent teasing.

In America, almost anything goes. You can't use a four letter word, but other than that you're free to do what you want, that's part of the first amendment right to free speech.
Reply:I remember hearing that SS can stop you from naming your child a name they may consider profanity ora name that would not be socially acceptable (something really off the wall)
Reply:Nope. Unfortunately you can name your child anything you want. First, middle and last names are all up to the parents.
Reply:i say go with whoever suggested knocking her out, then grandma can name her.
Reply:well I dont think there is anything she can do legaly but my grandma was in the delivery room of a C-section and told them to nock my aunt out because my aunt wanted to name her daughter something I dont even remember know but when they asked what the babys name was going to be my grandma said savanha and as soon as they put it in ink thats what they had to call her. hint hint if she wants to do that I'm sure she will be fine cause danni-boi is reducules sorry.
